The main objective of the Geary County Noxious Weed Department is to control noxious weeds with the least damage to desirable vegetation at a minimum cost.
WHAT ARE NOXIOUS WEEDS? A weed is a plant that interferes with management objectives for a given area at a given point in time. Under the Kansas Noxious Weed Law, the state legislature has declared certain weeds noxious and requires citizens of the state to use approved methods to control and eradicate these weeds. The noxious weeds are: Woolly Leaf Bursage (Bur Ragweed), Canada Thistle, Field Bindweed, Hoary Cress, Hogpotato, Johnsongrass, Kudzu, Leafy Spurge, Musk Thistle, Quackgrass, Russian Knapweed and Sericea Lespedeza. The weeds listed above have been declared noxious because of their abundance; ability to reproduce, compete and spread rapidly or they may be toxic to humans or livestock. The most commonly recognized noxious weeds are Musk Thistle and Field Bindweed.
CHEMICALS FOR SALE- The county is authorized to sell pesticide products to agricultural landowners within the county at a reduced cost when these pesticides are used in the control of noxious weeds on privately owned land. Please call our office for current prices and availability.
The Geary County Noxious Weed Department manages the Household Hazardous Waste satellite facility. This facility serves to take latex paint, oil based paint, hazardous household materials, automotive chemicals, pesticides and herbicides out of the waste stream. Usable materials are recycled and latex paint is bulked together and distributed to the public at no charge. The Noxious Weed Department also oversees the recycle trailer located at the HHW site.
